Downers Grove North Preaching Steadiness

By: Phil English
Source: Tribune

Chad Isaacson returns to a common theme when discussing the players on his Downers Grove North baseball team — steadiness.

Steadiness is what it takes to survive in the often tough West Suburban Silver. And it helps a team stay toward the top of the conference, even when it’s not playing its best baseball.

“These guys are in the right frame of mind,” Isaacson said. “We went through a little bit of a lull here recently, with losses to Oak Park and Downers Grove South. But these guys know how to dust off and get back to work. They’ve consistently showed resiliency.

“And we’re competing every single day and doing the little things. We’re not always flashy. And to be honest, we’ve had years where guys have had bigger arms, but our guys know you have to play pitch to pitch, inning to inning. And it all goes back to leadership.”

The Trojans were 18-8 overall and 11-5 in the Silver heading into the final week of the regular season. They’ve done it without a significant amount of power hitting or a dominating pitcher.

Softball: Downers Grove North’s Ryndak, Heflin Shut Down York

Chicago Tribune

By Bob Narang

Downers Grove North sophomore pitcher Dale Ryndak glanced over at the stands a few times Wednesday to get a glimpse of her past and possible future.

Ryndak’s pitching coach and a representative of Purdue were on hand for her start against York.

“I was pumped up and felt the adrenaline today,” Ryndak said. “I came to play. Today, it was a business trip for me.”

Ryndak and Elaine Heflin combined for 15 strikeouts to lead No. 8 Downers Grove North to a 1-0 victory over York in West Suburban Conference Silver action.

Ryndak (8-1) pitched the first five innings, fanning nine batters and allowing two hits. The Dukes (10-15, 4-3) didn’t get a runner past second base all game.

“I felt stronger today and really wanted to do well,” Ryndak said. “I had plenty of motivation to do well today.”

York senior Tessa Kroll (4-5) was the hard luck loser after tossing seven innings of two-hit ball. Kroll struck out three batters and weaved her way out of trouble several times.

South High Students Place First And Second In State Architecture Competition

TribLocal

Two students from South High School in Downers Grove placed first and second in the Illinois Drafting Educators Association (IDEA)’s state competition, which was held at Illinois State University on April 14, 2012.

Junior Adam Newton took first place and is state champion in the 3D Architectural CAD competition. Newton is the first student from South High School to win a state championship two years in a row. In 2011, he won the Architectural 2D competition.

Senior Chris Behnke placed second in the same category, 3D Architectural CAD.

The 3D Architectural CAD competition requires students to complete a fully dimensioned floor plan as well as 3D Virtual model of a residential home. All students must adhere to specific building parameters, as well as completing the project with a certain time constraint.

Also qualifying for state were South High student Ross Netzel, who competed in the Architectural CAD Drawing 2D category, and North High student Jordan Gill, who competed in Assembly Modeling. Teacher Tony Ciezaldo sponsors the SkillsUSA program at North High.

The students competed against qualifiers from 20 regions across Illinois.

Softball: Panko Steps On Clutch To Drive No. 5 Benet Past No. 2 Downers Grove North

Chicago Tribune

By Bob Narang

Six players have combined to hit 29 home runs in 22 games this season for Benet.

Maeve McGuire leads the team with nine; Kendall Duffy and Stephanie Abello each have seven.

But No. 2 hitter Marissa Panko has yet to clear the fence.

Still, she has a knack for being clutch. Panko notched her second winning hit in three games with a sixth-inning RBI single Tuesday to lead No. 5 Benet to a 6-3 comeback victory against No. 2 Downers Grove North.

“She’s not going to hit home runs, but she’ll hit the ball,” Benet coach Jerry Schilf said of Panko.

The Redwings (20-2) didn’t need to play power ball while earning their eighth consecutive victory. Benet had one extra-base hit — a fifth-inning double by Duffy — and managed just six hits against Downers Grove North’s Elaine Heflin (9-3).

Benet scored its first run on an RBI groundout, tied the score on a wild pitch and took advantage of three errors by Downers Grove North and six walks by Heflin.
