The following items were taken from Downers Grove police reports on Sept. 19.

Arson

A sign that was posted in the front lawn of a residence in the 3900 block of Glendenning Road was set on fire sometime between 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 15. This is the second incident in the last month in which a sign was burned in the neighborhood. In late August another homeowner on Glendenning Road reported that an American flag hanging from her house had been torched overnight.

Soliciting

Two out-of-state men were arrested for selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door without a permit at 5:40 p.m. on Sept. 15. The men – one from Dallas, Texas, the other from Jackson, Miss. – told police they were dropped off in the area, near the 4000 block of Sterling Road, by their boss and told to sell magazines. The two were charged with violating village ordinance. Each was released after posting $120 bond.

Organized retail theft

Petco employees called police to report a suspicious incident that occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 16. Employees told police that a man in his 50s walked into the store, located in the 1400 block of 75th Street, empty-handed but later showed up at a cash register with a receipt and a $45 water pump he wanted to return. Earlier that day a regional security manager for the pet store chain told employees that an organized group was using fraudulent receipts to return items that weren’t paid for. The cashier told the man she had to call the store where the pump was purchased to verify the receipt. The man then man left the store.
